Honoring maternal love and patriotic sacrifice this May—join us as The Gardens blossoms with celebration, remembrance, and the warmth of our community family.
May brings us two special occasions to honor those who mean the most to us.
As the spring flowers bloom around our beautiful Littleton campus, we take time to celebrate the mothers in our community and remember those who have served our nation.
Mother's Day: Sunday, May 11th
"A mother possesses incredible wisdom and wonderful insight and skill. In each human heart is that one special corner which only a mother can fill!" - Katherine Nelson Davis
Mother's Day falls on Sunday, May 11th this year, and we have special celebrations planned for May 10th to honor all the mothers in our Gardens family.
Did you know? Anna Jarvis, known as "the mother of Mother's Day," campaigned tirelessly for a holiday to celebrate all mothers. Though she never married nor had children herself, her dedication led President Wilson to officially designate the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day in 1914.
In the U.K., the tradition of "Mothering Sunday" dates back to the 1600s, celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The tradition faded in the 19th century but was revived during World War II when American servicemen brought their Mother's Day traditions to Europe.
Memorial Day: Monday, May 26th
"I believe our flag is more than just cloth and ink. It is a universally recognized symbol that stands for liberty, and freedom. It is the history of our nation, and it's marked by the blood of those who died defending it." - John Thune
This Memorial Day, we pause to recognize those who have laid down their lives in service to our country. We offer our sincere gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to all who have served.

El Cinco de Mayo—Spanish for "The Fifth of May"—is often mistaken as Mexico's independence day. It actually celebrates the Mexican army's 1862 victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla, led by General Ignacio S. Zaragoza.
In 1862, Mexico had recently gained independence from Spain when France launched an assault at Veracruz. An underdog Mexican militia of 4,500 faced 8,000 well-armed French troops at Puebla. Despite the odds, the Mexicans triumphed in this David-versus-Goliath battle, instilling a new sense of national pride in the young country of Mexico.
Six years later, France withdrew its claim on the country, cementing the significance of this May 5th victory.
